All trees create dead wood - this is a way of the tree getting rid of limbs it no longer requires. A large amount of dead wood in the crown of a tree may be a sign of a more serious issue (root problems, bark or cambium diseases).

Dead wood can be a major problem - if your tree overhangs a public highway or footpath then it is your responsibility to make sure that it is safe.
